Interlibrary Loan FAQ and Policies

Request Processing

Who may make an interlibrary loan request?

  • Any currently enrolled for-credit student or current employee may request materials through interlibrary loan.
  • Materials requested through interlibrary loan may be used for academic or personal purposes.  Commercial use is prohibited. If you have questions about what constitutes commercial use, please email interlibraryloan@occc.edu or call (405) 682-1611, x7390.

How long does it take?

  • Articles usually come in one to two business days, but occasionally take up to a week. Look for them in your OCCC email.
  • Books may take several weeks to arrive.  Most books arrive within ten days to two weeks.  Allow at least ten days.
  • To check on the status of an interlibrary loan request, email interlibraryloan@occc.edu or call (405) 682-1611, x7390.

Where do I pick up my request?

  • You will be notified by phone or email.
  • Pick up interlibrary loan books at the Library Circulation Desk.
  • Interlibrary loan articles will be sent to your OCCC email.  Concurrently enrolled high school students may use their high school email address.

How long can I keep my ILL?

  • The length of the lending period is set by the lending library. Interlibrary loan books are commonly loaned for one month. Articles are copies that are yours to keep.
  • You are responsible for returning the borrowed material to the OCCC Library on time. Email the ILL staff at interlibraryloan@occc.edu to request a renewal.

Policies and Restrictions

Lost or Missing Items

  • If an item is not returned, you will be charged a replacement cost set by the lending library.
  • Until the item is returned or paid for, students will be placed on academic hold, and may lose future interlibrary loan privileges.  All lending privileges will be suspended until the item is returned or paid for.

Number of Requests

  • There is no limit on the number of requests, however large numbers (more than ten per day) may be delayed in processing so that requests from other users may be processed.
  • Library staff reserves the right to limit the number of requests made if the number of requests is significant enough to impact staff's ability to serve all students.

Restrictions on Requests

  • When a free copy of an interlibrary loan request cannot be located, OCCC Library staff reserve the right to cancel the request.
  • Lending libraries may place restrictions on the loan. "For Library Use Only" and other restrictions must be honored.
  • Interlibrary loan staff reserve the right to refuse service to any patron who may jeopardize borrowing agreements by violating lending library's stipulations.
  • Textbooks cannot be requested via interlibrary loan.
  • CONTU guidelines limit the number of copies a library may request from periodicals published within the last five years. Usually this will not affect the ability to request material. Please visit the Copyright Help Guide for more information.
  • Interlibrary loan users are agreeing to abide by the copyright laws of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code). Material requested through interlibrary loan shall be used only for personal or academic research.  Commercial use is not allowed.
  • Requests may only be made by currently enrolled for-credit students and current employees.
  • Requests are for individual use.  Copies may not be made for classroom use or posted in an online learning platform.
